Palermo
In Palermo, the South explodes before your eyes, sinks into your heartbeat, and flows under your skin. Palermo is magnificent, surprising, full of art and history: it is a city unlike any other in the world.
What to see in Palermo
Palermo's historic center is best explored on foot: in just a few minutes, you can pass the Quattro Canti, the city's Baroque crossroads, the Fontana Pretoria, the Cathedral, and the Teatro Massimo, one of Europe's largest opera houses. Arab-Norman Palermo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: here, you'll find the Norman Palace with the Palatine Chapel and its golden mosaics, the Martorana Church, and San Cataldo with its distinctive red domes.
Markets, cuisine and street food
Palermo also tells its story at the table. The historic markets of Ballarò, Capo, and Vucciria are the perfect place to sample Palermo's street food: arancini, panelle, pane e milza, and sfincione. And to finish, a cannolo, a slice of cassata, or, in the summer, granita with brioche. Wandering among the stalls, amidst the colors and aromas, is already a must-see.
The sea of Palermo
Just a few kilometers from the city center is Mondello, with its white sandy beach and Art Nouveau promenade, ideal for a day at the beach without leaving the city. Nature lovers can continue to the Capo Gallo nature reserve, nestled among cliffs and crystal-clear water.
